WADHAM COLLEGE STAIRCASE 12
Client: Wadham College
Location: Wadham College, Oxford

The proposals for the rebuilding of the upper stories to 38 Holywell Street have been carefully developed within a recognised framework of working within conservation areas.

The concept for the building creates a layered facade which subtly completes the 18th century street frontage. It uses a modulated shading screen reflecting the solid and void of the street frontage, whilst at the same time expressing the contemporary design of the accommodation behind. A further layer of sophistication has been added by the placing of a glazed facade between the shading screen and the panelling to the room interior, allowing the passer-by a glimpse as it were from the outside into the cloistered world of Oxford scholarship.
